Speed Dating in Perth has rapidly accelarated in recent times.

Today I am, because I make the rules and I can change them if I want to. Uh, because I went speed dating this week, and chances are, you're probably curious about what that is/whether it was fun and if you should try it, and I've got your back. (Note: I've taken measures to protect the some of the innocent, stupid, and/or ridiculous people I met last night.

Also, this story involves complete strangers, and therefore, is unlikely to come back to haunt me.

As in, I conveniently forgot their names.)Rewind two weeks: I'm hanging out with some girlfriends and one of them mentions how she saw a groupon-like deal for speed dating.

In my head, I said, "Wouldn't it be fun if we all did that?

" Obviously, everyone agreed because we all bought them the very next day.

So turn off that Lifetime movie or rerun of “Deep Space 9," get off the couch and check out these events around town. If you’re looking for something a bit quieter, poet Jonathan Ames will host an anti-Valentine’s party and poetry reading at 7 p.m., Feb. Ames and other poets will read from the poetry compilation “It’s Not You, It’s Me.” FOR PLAYAS (OR HATERS) The New York Social Network is billing its Friday night party at Amnesia nightclub as “New York’s largest singles anti-Valentine’s Day bash.” Starting at 7 p.m., there will be plenty of opportunities to make that love connection as the booze flows and deejays spin tunes.

The thought of couples fawning over each other in every restaurant while over-paying for a cutesy-themed prix-fixe meal is enough to drive some people over the edge.

Just a bar, some music and the chance to meet others like them - or a chance to go somewhere and forget how alone - or angry - they really are.
