Old fashioned terms for dating

I am trying to find a good word to describe our relationship, but "girlfriend" and "boyfriend" seems inappropriate for us.It reminds me of those forty year old guys who say "I'm gittin' down wi ma hommies." It communicates, but it seems out of place.This term may also refer to two or more people who have already decided they share romantic or sexual feelings toward each other.

This time around, Robert from Coloma expressed dissatisfaction with the words boyfriend and girlfriend, suggesting a new word to cover both: inti-mate.

Robert's idea is to take the adjective intimate and pronounce the final syllable as mate.
